Franklin, Massachusetts, opened one of the country's first public libraries in 1790, where locals could borrow books donated by Benjamin Franklin. In 1731, the Founding Fathers established the Library Company, a lending library in Philadelphia that charged a subscription fee of 40 shillings.

Subjects and keywords for novels usually describe the primary themes of the book, rather than every topic handled. The subjects in article databases will describe the topic of the article or chapter of a book. As a result, "needle in a haystack" searches in article databases are occasionally possible. In the library catalogue, this type of search rarely works.
